When some producers wanted to take Issa Bagayogo's sound electronic, he was a little reluctant. He didn't need to be. 2002's Timbuktu is a triumph: it's deeply enjoyable and dominated by Bagayogo's powerful voice and Mama Diabete's ngoni (West African lute) playing. Every producer should take hints from this sparkling mix of traditional and contemporary Mali.
