Undercover by J Boogie's Dubtronic Science
Released: Oct 2011
Label: OM Records
San Francisco producer Justin "J-Boogie" Boland won't be confined by genre. He spends his third album hopping from Afrobeat ("No Freedom") to Jamaican dub ("Blue Mountain Dub"), party rap ("It's On Fire") and funk ("Magik"). Undercover showcases his interests, but as a listening experience it's stretched by too many styles, and a list of Bay Area performers that includes Lateef the Truthspeaker, Gina Rene of Soulstice, MC Zulu and Rashaan Ahmad. J-Boogie's attention to detailed sounds, which frequently expand into lush downtempo grooves, gives the album a common thread.
