Underground hip-hop production showcases are a mixed bag. Usually, they offer leftover beats and the guest verses are mediocre and oftentimes recycled. White Van Music is better than most, but just barely. Jake One is a meat-and-potatoes guy, specializing in cut-up soul boom bap. He has a knack for jerky rhythms ("Oh Really") and loopy, piano-driven backdrops ("Get Er Done"). The guest roster here is impressively diverse (ranging from MF DOOM and Brother Ali to Young Buck and Freeway) and their performances are generally adequate, if not revealing.
