The Singles Volume Three: 1964-1965
by James Brown
Released: Aug 2007
Label: Hip-O Select
Volume Three of James Brown's The Singles series is like a tedious story with a fantastic finale. Brown treaded water throughout 1964 and much of 1965, rewriting old hits ("Bewildered" became "So Long") and conducting instrumental workouts with his Famous Flames, like "Soul Food." Then he finally connected with two classics, "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" (a superior rewrite of "Out Of Sight") and "I Got You." The great thing about The Singles is that those seminal tunes, when placed amid the chaff of his other recordings, no longer sound like eureka moments, but the results of hard work.
