Shake What God Gave Ya
James Otto
Released:
Sep 2010
Label:
Warner Bros.
Sung soul deep throughout, with touches of falsetto and gospel backup and lots of dance-grooved beach-music sun, Otto's third album ranks with Nashville's most unabashed recent blue-eyed R&B records. He starts out asking if he can get a witness over ZZ Top blues riffs and Memphis organ, and though he includes an obligatory waltz for Christian soldiers and a line or two about the economy, he devotes way more time to his lover-man credentials -- most convincingly in the final two cuts, both about stepping out with other men's women, and the second boasting country-soul vet Ronnie Milsap.
