The flutist's breakout recording offers mostly original compositions that draw from Latin and South Asian traditions. A killer medium-size group puts the music over expertly. (Brad Shepik is on guitar; Samuel Torres and Dan Weiss contribute to the percussion section; the trumpet parts are handled by names like Amir ElSaffar and Taylor Haskins.) The leader-composer shines in the opening "Nusrat" (as does the full ensemble), while "Ants and Other Faithful Beings" has cut, thrust and swing. Don't miss "The Game," a reworking of music by the Pakistani Qawwali vocalist Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
