It's on the 1963 album Surf City and Other Swingin' Cities that Jan & Dean became a full-blown surf act, one championing woodies, the perfect wave, sassy beach babes and skateboards. The doo-wop marking the duo's earliest releases is barely to be found. In its place stands a mix of Chuck Berry-inspired rock and novelty pop. Jan Berry was growing into one savvy producer. Tracks like "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans" and "Soul City," while geared towards the teen-pop market, are really quite ambitious. The latter tune ends in a phantasmagoric explosion of primal drumming and sound effects.
