Jane Monheit
Released:
Jan 2007
Label:
Concord Records
While Diana Krall works a sophisticated vibe that recalls the golden age of jazz-influenced popular song (Peggy Lee, Nat Cole and Sinatra), Jane Monheit has become a best-seller by adding to open-throated belting of Streisand and Garland to her jazz foundation. On her first album for Concord Records, Monheit also tempers this with a laidback Brazilian vibe that includes guest appearances by Ivan Lins, Sergio Mendes and Toots Thielemans (a Belgian jazz master who holds advanced degrees in Bossa and Nova). Monheit has a beautiful instrument and even when she completely sidesteps a jazz or bossa nova feel (as on a Babs worthy "Moon River") she still comes out ahead.
