Jay Brannan is often described as a singer-songwriter, but that's not wholly accurate. On In Living Cover, his sophomore album, he's an interpreter of songs above all else. Of the record's nine tracks, seven are covers. These range from faithful renditions (Joni Mitchell's "All I Want") to radical reworkings (the Cranberries' "Zombie" and the Bob Dylan classic "Blowin' in the Wind"). Brannan even tries to rescue the Verve Pipe's alt-pop anthem "The Freshman" from the ranks of the overcooked. Brave, he is.
