Blackjack, originally released in 1969 as Ramblin' Boy, is one of bluegrass' first responses to California country rock. Of course, there's plenty of traditional fare here, including a cover of Flatt and Scruggs' beautiful "Bouquet in Heaven." But there's also a stunning take on the Flying Burrito Brothers' "Sin City," which feels so natural, so archaic that you'd never guess it was written by a couple of 20-something hippies just several months earlier. The Burritos must've loved this cover.
