By 1969, the heavy fuzz of Hendrix, Cream and Blue Cheer had rendered the Airplane's acid-kissed folk-rock totally obsolete. So the band turned up its amps and kicked out the jams. Grace Slick, Marty Balin and Paul Kantner no longer harmonize; they breathe fire like a triple-headed dragon. But its guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady who make the Airplane such a convincing hard rock outfit. During the disc's many extended workouts these two possess a seemingly psychic connection.
