Once a cult movie star, now a children's musician, Jessica Harper is something of a revelation. First off, this album's 12 tracks were written in response to various classic paintings, ranging from Picasso's "Self Portrait with a Palette" to Monet's "Caricature of a Lawyer." But don't expect wonk-ish Baby Genius stuff here: the songs traffic in irreverence, sometimes responding to the people in the paintings or to the artist himself, all underpinned by Harper's warm, Joni Mitchell-meets-Karen Carpenter alto voice. Fantastic.
