Jimmy Eat World isn't about radical reinvention, yet the group does possess a knack for keeping up with trends. Significantly less cheery than its predecessor, 2007's Chase This Light, Invented is an overtly earnest affair that finds the group dabbling in anthemic Americana ("Heart Is Hard to Find"), power pop ("Coffee and Cigarettes") and funky neo-new wave ("My Best Theory"). Overall, Jimmy Eat World are at their best when going for more of a modern heartland rock sound -- think The BoDeans filtered through Weezer. The stabs at dance rock, in contrast, are just kind of meh.
