Jimmy Green won a prestigious grant to debut an extended jazz work and the tenor saxophonist went on to compose The Overcomer's Suite. The four part work doesn't sound like Coltrane's A Love Supreme, but it works in a similar spiritual vein -- in his case, Green links biblical themes to our modern struggles. Don't let any of that scare you away -- this is lively, vital jazz that features a young band, which includes drummer Kendrick Scott, pianist Xavier Davis and bassist Luques Curtis.
