Opener "Not Dead Yet" refers, however obliquely, to the fact that it's been seven years since her last hit, but on the best moments of Me Messina sings like someone who has realized there's more to life than chasing the charts and dealing with music business politics. The title track, for instance, finds her weighing everything she does against everything that's expected of her, and "A Woman's Rant" narrates a day of chores and ponders the gender pay gap. "He's Messed Up," meanwhile, starts sad but turns around quickly, climaxing with teen-pop-influenced call-and-response sing-along.
