Life of Contradiction
Joe Higgs
Released:
Jan 1975
Label:
Pressure Sounds
Joe Higgs is an old-school reggae insider: The man actually taught the Wailers how to harmonize. But his music also influenced reggae's direction: His early albums were classified as "ghetto music" for their gritty lyrical content. Life of Contradiction was recorded in 1972 by Island Records, but Chris Blackwell decided not to release it, so it didn't see the light of day until 1975. It is a masterful and unusual album, one that stands out for its broad embrace of influences outside of reggae and its lyrical toggling between the personal and the political.
