At the height of his fame, Joe South once invited an entire audience to line up in a ring around the hall he was playing and each take a turn kissing his behind. Then he quit the music business and moved to Hawaii following his brother's suicide. Before all this he wrote "Hush" (covered by Deep Purple) and "Down in the Boondocks," which Billy Joe Royal made famous.
