Although it was his 1966 recording of the Suites that received the first accolade, Paul Tortelier's 1983 interpretation sparkles both with his peerless wit and moments of philosophical beauty that only come with age. At 70, Tortelier still makes his cello dance on nimble feet, with faster tempi that don't feel rushed so much as vibrant with energy and potential. The recording has a hallowing effect, but it only takes a minute to reconfigure the ears to hear the full range of his art.
