Nixon In China
by John Adams
Released: Sep 2005
Considered John Adams' most significant work and one of the most important operas of the 20thcentury, Nixon in China is both accessible and inventive. The storyline follows Nixon's 1972 visit with Mao Zedong, moving through official visits that gradually reveal the true natures of their characters. It's oddly moving to hear '70s politics sung over Adams' post-minimalist patchwork style. This is also one of the finer recordings of the work, including brilliant soloists, musicians and choir.
