Here are two of John Adams' more quiet offerings in the new century. The Dharma at Big Sur, for electric violin and orchestra, pays homage to the beat poets and minimalists, like Terry Riley, with its Eastern-tinged strings and shimmering suspended chords. The other work references Charles Ives with a trumpet like that of the Unanswered Question, and utilizes Ives' passion for cacophony and moments of awkwardly beautiful stillness.
