Four Walls
John Cage
Released:
Jan 1989
Label:
Tomato Records
Written for friend and collaborator Merce Cunningham in 1944, Four Walls was all but forgotten until pianist Richard Bunger's revival. The sparse, Satie-like movements (Cage used only the white keys) depict a family's spiraling madness. The piano itself descends downward, resonating with a horrible sound hinting at expressionism and pointing to the post-war era.
