Such Sweet Sorrow: Lute Pieces By John Dowland
by John Dowland
Released: Dec 2003
Label: Centaur Records, Inc.
One of the finest lutenists of his time, John Dowland created the English version of the lute-song. He was fond of dance music and wrote more than 30 galliards, a swift, triple-metered court dance popular in the Elizabethan era. His "Semper Dowland, Semper Dolens" translates, "Always Dowland, always doleful," and perhaps best captures the pathos of that time.
