The Open Road repudiates everything Hiatt embraced on 2008's Same Old Man. Instead of coming to terms with the wrinkles and gray hair invading his countenance, he's launched a counteroffensive. Right from the opening title track, a tale of living large on the open road replete with a reference to Mardi Gras beads, Hiatt feels like rock and rolling and living large. Of course, this is John Hiatt we're talking about, which means just beneath the surface lurks a faint, but very real, whiff of dread.
