This percussion piece, as sprawling (and violent) as the great Alaskan wilderness that inspired its composer, was originally intended to be a surround-sound, live experience. But this studio rendering is the best possible stereo version one could hope for. Things start quietly in "Part I" before building up a decent head of cathartic steam in the following three movements. That it closes with a return-to-rest may not be the most surprising move -- ashes to ashes, and all that cycle-of-life business -- but the progression feels profound anyway.
