Part musician, part media artist, John Oswald creates kinetic samplescapes of pop culture references. Digitally appropriated, dissected and displayed, his works function as both an embrace and a critique of the cultural commodity of sound, which is at once an object to be purchased, possessed and consumed, and to be disseminated as part of the collective mythos of American culture. Whether ripping and reorganizing Metallica's riffs or shuffling Glenn Gould's sheet music, Oswald maintains the voice of the original while opening it up to new musical and conceptual possibilities.
