John Phillips (John, The Wolf King Of L.A.) (Bonus Tracks)

John Phillips (John, The Wolf King Of L.A.) by John Phillips
Released: Jan 1970
Label: Varese
If The Mamas and the Papas' blissful harmonies expressed the apex of hippie utopianism, then cofounder John Phillips' 1970 solo debut -- folk-rock torn, frayed and set adrift in a narcotic haze -- expresses that utopia's tragic dissolution. While he and the mighty Wrecking Crew committed these weary tunes to tape, the Manson Family unleashed their grisly murders in and around the very L.A. canyons he called home. When on "Topanga Canyon" Phillips laments, "Oh Mary, I'm in deep water, and it's way, way over my head," he isn't just singing of his own demons, but those of an entire generation.
