Uberjam Deux by John Scofield
Released: Jul 2013
Label:
From a master of the form, here's some muscular but not too rude jazz-guitar jamming. A sequel to 2002's Uberjam, this features a slightly different band with a sharper fusion. (No dabbling with mediocre rapping this time.) Despite titles like "Boogie Stupid," Scofield has some smarts in store: "Camelus" begins in small-ensemble power mode, but gains surprising effects by midpoint; "Endless Summer" offers subtle dynamic play. The band earns its pop moves: electro-funk on "Cracked Ice," and Motown on "Al Green Song" and "Scotown." Plus John Medeski's organ helps "Dub Dub" get over.
