Closing in on 60 and working in Nashville with Matchbox 20's Kyle Cook, the ex-Baby pulls off one of his career's craftiest albums. A lot of it qualifies as hard rock -- most memorably the salacious Tina Turner cover "Sweet Rhode Island Red" and the superbly constructed and guitared "Better Off Gone," the best of three breakup tunes. Add in a few expert mall-blues ballads and the velvety disco rock of "Evil," and Waite earns the right to end with half-pretentious coke trip and gallows pole numbers that name-drop Paganini, Baudelaire and Columbus.
