If you ignored history books and only listened to this hour-long soundtrack to Steven Spielberg's film about the 16th American President, you might think Honest Abe spent his whole life posing for noble portraits. Titles like "Getting Out the Vote" and "Race to the House," which are possibly suggestive of tension, wind up being devoted to folksy (if well executed) pickin'. Because this is John Williams' movie-music, there's not much dissonance. Still, "Elegy" has a hint of something hard-won, and "Appomattox, April 9, 1865" does justice to the gravity of its historical moment.
