After composing soundtracks and self-releasing two out-there improvised albums, Johnette Napolitano decided to go for something completely different on her third solo venture, something she'd never tried before, totally unfamiliar terrain: gruff but bruised, tender but tough-as-vampire-fangs rock. In all seriousness, though, Scarred is the solo album the former Concrete Blonde frontwoman was destined to make. It's decadently overwrought, packed with more consistently good songs than any Concrete Blonde album. And most of all, it's got Johnette's box-of-razor-blades voice.
