When jazz was streamlining and tightening up, tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin released this 1956 bebop set for Blue Note Records. A fearsome soloist, Griffin starts out at a bouncing tempo on tracks like "Chicago Calling" and "Nice and Easy," but as he rolls along, the chords start catching fire. He shows his gentler side on "These Foolish Things," giving pianist Wynton Kelly and drummer Max Roach a chance to catch their breath.
