Irabagon, a tenor saxophonist in Mary Halvorson's groups, has collaborated with legendary drummer Barry Altschul before. For this live date in Germany, though, Altschul mainstay Mark Helias brought his bass along. The result is a blistering trio session. "Wherewithal" darts in and out of composed passages, allowing Altschul in particular a lot of room to roam. Irabagon's most impressive feature comes on "Quintessential Kitten." But it's this group's mysterious way of holding things together that outshines even the best solo moments.
