This self-released 2007 outtakes set pairs studio recordings recorded between 1968 and 1972 with a ‘72 live-in-Berkeley set. On the live half, "Dancing Couple" hints at salsa, and the nine-minute-long "Laugh Don't Lie" could almost pass for the Incredible Bongo Band before evolving into Santana. "Brownsville/Mockingbird," even longer at 11 minutes, is blues-structured piano jazz with a Bo Diddley beat. All over, folk-hippie harmonies mesh surprisingly with loose Latinized rhythms. So even if their gender politics fly right past you, you’ll be convinced J of C’s fans could outdance Deadheads.
