After breaking out with snappy, sassy YouTube covers, Karmin released a debut that watered all that down in cocktail beats and pop cheese. But Pulses finds Karmin finding their pulse again. Sure, it's schticky and showtune-esque, overdrawn on hokey lyrics like "Neon Love," over-stylized (see: the dubby "Gasoline") and regularly oversung. But if we approach Karmin like the big-haired, wide-eyed, sugar-coated camp queens they are, it's also a lot of fun, especially on cuts like the stomping "Puppet," the high-drama beats-n-ballad jam "Tidal Wave" and the so-obnoxious-it's-good "Acapella."
