Alt-country queen Kasey Chambers has been huge in her native Australia since 1999's The Captain; her sixth album, Little Bird, wisely keeps the focus on her sharp, sweet, mournful voice, which turns the gripping title track into both a heartbroken lament and a girl-power anthem. The banjo-laden "Nullarbor (The Biggest Backyard)" rhapsodizes her open-sky childhood home, "as wide as it was high"; ribald closing rocker "Train Wreck" lets her snarl a little. But soft sadness is her medium: "I'm all cried out," she moans on one of the ballads -- but don't count on it.
