For the first time since the beginning of her career, k.d. lang has assembled her own band. The Siss Boom Bang is fabulous: Nashville songwriter Joe Pisapia and other alt-country masters gracefully dance with lang's voice, tucking in bits of banjo and swooping in with steel guitar licks. But as elegant as the band's arrangements are, the instrument your ears are still inevitably drawn to is lang's. Her spectacular voice, which has only gotten richer with age, croons and coaxes, soars high and dips low and sounds like the vocal manifestation of desire.
