Having made his shtick familiar on the HBO show Treme, the trumpet ambassador, funeral-wake mainstay, barbecue chef and Rebirth Brass Band founder gets his parade on with three standards borrowed from Satchmo, two long originals about how much Ruffins loves New Orleans, and one oldie each from Sam Cooke, Sammy Cahn, South Pacific, The Wizard of Oz (Latinized to nine minutes), and bubblegummers Spiral Staircase. Several songs express optimism amid hard times; five are arranged by pianist Matt Lemmler, with a crack seven-man horn section. The spirit and rhythm rarely let up or sound canned.
