Before "Bette Davis Eyes" permanently cemented Carnes in the lexicon of great rock singles, she was a country-folk-tinged singer prone to the occasional lounge-y number, as this 1971 debut attests to. No matter what she's playing, there's always a heavy dose of soul rounding things out. With that raspy, Rod Stewart-like voice toned down just a little bit, Carnes comes off like a more radio-friendly Bonnie Raitt (minus the guitar chops). A super soulful, bluesy take on the Bee Gees' classic "To Love Somebody" points to the good things to come and sounds more than a little like Delaney & Bonnie.
