Konono No. 1's moment may have come a few years before this release, but the group has never sounded so vital. The extended jam on "Makembe" starts in familiar territory, but with the addition of a commenting guitar, the song works itself into an ecstatic yet levelheaded frenzy. At their best, these songs need no beginning or end -- they are simply portals to an altered state of sound and consciousness. But trance, for a western listener, is a hard state to sustain, so the album makes concessions, varying the formula just enough to make you really sit up and notice when things get magical.
