Pianist Kris Davis is good at putting space in between her lightning-fast instrumental workouts. "Too Tinkerbell" may be the most modern-classical-ish thing she's done yet (thank the Cage-ian whistling part). "Trevor's Luffa Complex," named after bassist Trevor Dunn, has a cool glockenspiel part after the opening -- and then Ingrid Laubrock manages a tenor sax solo that's both "out there" and controlled. Violist Mat Maneri gets a lot of strong feature moments ("Pass the Magic Hat"). The title track meanders a bit, but "Big Band Ball" and "Pi Is Irrational" find unlikely paths to groove.
