Here we find the pianist in a classic trio setting. But these tunes are anything but conventional: Written while she was expecting her first child, these elastic, surprising pieces are an investigation into the process of creation. Opener "Whirly Swirly" launches with some of Tom Rainey's wild percussion, before Davis and bassist John Hebert join in, swinging. Later, Davis plays inside the piano, and Hebert toys with arco bass harmonics. The final minutes are given to lumbering, hard-hitting motifs. And that's just the first track. The rest of the album is just as inventive -- and unmissable.
