Tan Dun's Ghost Opera for string quartet and pipa also draws in water sounds, Buddist monk chants, spoken fragments of Shakespeare, moments reminiscent of Bach and Chinese peasant song together in a five-act cycle celebrating both contemporary life and nostalgia. In this 1997 recording, the Kronos Quartet sparkles, especially on the percussive accompaniment to virtuoso pipa playing as on "Earth Dance."
