On her first album after her cancer diagnosis and treatment, the Aussie pop princess seems determined to reclaim her spot under the disco ball -- using a retro '80s sound to do it. But while X does achieve a few pitch-perfect pop moments (see the single "2 Hearts"), the artifice wears a little thin. Minogue's at her best when she sidesteps the pop mainstream, either diving into adventurous production or letting that fragile, spun sugar voice own a song, for once. Much-rumored collabos with the Scissor Sisters, Boy George and others don't materialize here, but keep an ear out.
