Like any good new artist, La Shica pissed off the purists and both confused and attracted the hipsters. She started out as a flamenco dancer, but it didn't feel right, so she shaved her head and started rapping. But this isn't rap in the North American sense: She draws from the jaleo and recitao styles of flamenco, and she considers coplas singer Lola Flores the best rapper in history -- hardly orthodox stuff. But she still gets it right, bringing a toughness, a world-weary cool to the table, even as she jokingly references the Gipsy Kings.
