Laura Cantrell pays homage to Kitty Wells, who broke the gender barrier in country music when, in 1952, she became the first woman to top the country charts. Nine of the 10 songs are covers. The lone original, "Kitty Wells Dresses," ties together Cantrell's obsessions: thrift-store shopping and old-school country music. Cantrell does the covers justice, walking a fine line of emotion and restraint -- much like her muse. "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels" is the smashing hit. Other highlights include "Making Believe," "I Gave My Wedding Dress Away" and "Searching for a Soldier's Grave."
