Christmas & The Beads Of Sweat
Laura Nyro
Released:
Jan 1970
Label:
Columbia
While it's a comfortably predictable experience to hear other people sing their own versions of Christmas carols that we all know, it's also refreshing to hear someone like the honey-voiced Laura Nyro sing songs about the way she felt during Christmas in 1970. Rather than sitting shotgun on Santa's sleigh, she tries to make sense of the Kent State massacre, corrupt politics and Vietnam during a time when everyone tends to embrace the more Hallmark aspects of the season. Eddie Hinton, Duane Allman, Alice Coltrane and others helped give this album a full, lush, soulful resonance.
