Truth & Soul, the production company behind Aloe Blacc's acclaimed Good Things, has an aesthetic similar to the Daptone Kings, with some key differences: these guys tend to favor less funk and more melodic arrangements, and they're unafraid to add modern touches, like using an unnamed female R&B vocalist on Lee Fields' Faithful Man. A soul shouter in the mode of Wilson Pickett, Fields nevertheless conveys deep sadness and emotion on "Moonlight Mile" and "It's All Over (But the Crying)," and croons passionately on rare grooves like "You're the Kind of Girl."
