Laidback 1950s West Coast jazz at its best. Niehaus plays supple, cool-toned bop alto sax but his ocean breeze arrangements let the entire octet (which includes Shelly Manne on drums, Bill Perkins on tenor sax and Pepper Adams on baritone sax) stand out with equal solo space. Forget musty nightclubs; jazz can work just as nicely as beach music.
