Lil' Wayne has always followed his own muse. His self-confidence has allowed him to go places that no other rapper would, and his trips to the outer borders of hip-hop have resulted in some fine music. So abandoning his signature style for the squealing rap-rock of Rebirth is a ballsy move. The album's stillborn angst and shredding guitar licks recall any number of post-311 shopping mall brooders. Some songs work -- "Drop the World" finds Wayne trading verses with a revitalized Eminem -- but it's hard to believe this will have the same widespread appeal as his previous efforts.
