This 1996 release earns a special place in Los Van Van's catalogue for capturing some of the magic and spontaneity -- not to mention swing -- of the band's live shows. Nowhere is that clearer than on Ay Dios Amparame, where irresistible rhythms provide cover for bold, strange melodies and ecstatic extended improvisations. It's a triumph of the form and one of the better examples of this seminal band's art.
